T5 shift fork assembly order

I'm almost through my T5 rebuild, but I'm having an issue with the shift forks. Every article, video, and picture I see of the shift forks has the levers that sit inside the forks themselves (and interface with the interlock lever) in a particular order. That is, that one is "above" or "on top of" the other. Whenever I put mine together, no matter which fork, lever, or other thing I change, my forks never line up with each other and float freely like everyone else's. When I reverse the order of which lever is "on top", they appear to function as they should (see pics). I'd really rather not put the pin in, finish the build, and hope it shifts. Does it really matter which one is above the other? Intuitively it seems order would be important, but I just can't get it to work.

Re: T5 shift fork assembly order

Update to this thread:

I assembled the forks as shown in my picture, in a different order than every other resource I could find. After assembling the transmission, it shifts just fine, does all gears correctly, and runs OK. In case anyone has this issue in the future, it does not feel to matter which fork fits over which on the interlock plate, so long as the forks can be even with each other for installation into the transmission. If the forks are not lined up, the cover will not go on.
