HELP: Weird Rear End/ Drive Train Problem.....
Hopefully someone here may know what is going on with my 87 Formula 350. First, let me try to explain the problem. Yesterday, while driving around town I entered a slight turn/bend in the road and begain hearing a weird sound coming from the rear of the car. At first, I couldn't destinguish where exactly it was coming from and it sounded kind of like a dragging piece of metal and only made the sound while turning or going around bends in the road. I actually thought that it was something in the front end. I pulled over and looked and everything was fine, nothing broken, or hanging. As I continued, the sound seemed to get a little worse. It was only occuring while driving on curvy roads, no sound at all when driving straight. Anyway, when I got to my destination and put the car in park (on a slight decline) I heard a really weird clunking sound from the rear end of the car. I got out and proceded to rock the car back and forth while in park and the noise occured everytime. What the hell can this be? I don't think the rear end is bad and this all started at about 40mph in traffic, it wasn't caused by spirited driving. Can this be caused by U joints or my tranny mount?
I had just taken a 500 mile trip to ATL, so maybe something could have rattled loose. Once again, nothing was hanging down or looked broken. What the heck can this be. It sounds serious and I know the problem lies in either the rear end, tranny or driveshaft. I didn't seem to be experiancing any new rattles, but the problem could have already exisited and the road trip could have sealed the deal. I only owned the car for a month.
Any help would be greatly appreciated and if I can supply you guys with any other helpful info, just ask. Thanks.
