700R4 suddenly lost drive/reverse

Hi guys wonder if anyone can give me some pointers.

out of the blue today the car lost drive. If i select drive or reverse it just revs, the car does move a tiny bit but only just. There were no noises, no fluid loss.

i checked fluid level and it was at the lower range on the dipstick. Topped it up so it was full, but that still hasnt helped.

the only observation i had prior to this was that there was a hard thud each time going from
neutral to drive or reverse, changes seemed pretty good though.

anything i can check prior to removing the transmission to help try and diagnose ?
thanks

Car: Yes
Engine: Usually
Transmission: Sometimes
Axle/Gears: Behind me somewhere
Re: 700R4 suddenly lost drive/reverse

If the fluid level is right when running, and goes WAY up when not, then the pump is working.

Sounds like maybe the low-reverse clutch has retired in some way.

Check all the external mechanical linkages first. I had this happen before and it was an easy fix.

Hope you're able to figure it out.

A check of the transmission fluid pressure would give you a good troubleshooting starting point

Re: 700R4 suddenly lost drive/reverse

Are you are saying that the Transmission does not operate in any of the gears?
Does the Park position keep the car from rolling away?

If the transmission does not move the vehicle in any of the gear ranges...
But the Park position does HOLD the car in place...

Then most likely the Oil-Pump or Torque-Converter are no longer working.
Installing a Line-Pressure gauge into the Test-Port on the Driver-side of the transmission (just rear of the bell-housing) will help diagnose.
No/ very low pressure on the gauge = The Oil-Pump is no longer working.

Good luck!

I forgot...

If the Park position does not hold the vehicle in place...
Then the output-shaft is most likely broken (or the rear-planet ring-gear)...
And I assume then, that you have been doing Neutral-Drops.

If it moves in first gear and has third gear, then the sunshell is gone. If the vehicle moves when in park, most likely the differential is the problem.
