I just rebuilt my 700r4 in my 90 Iroc w/350. This was my first attempt to rebuild it using a video from Pro-Built. I decided to do it myself because this is the 5th time it has gone out on me in 13+ years and that money adds up. The first couple of test drives after installation went good. It shifted great through all 4 gears. Now after driving it for about 5 miles the shifting goes from good to it redlining before it wants to shift in all gears. I have made sure the TV cable is adjusting according to the tech article....move the cable all the way toward the transmission then at WOT let the TV cable pull out to acheive WOT....except when i do that it doesnt need to move, it still stays all the way back at WOT. What else can cause that...overheating....governer....incorrect TV cable? Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

 

Possibly your cable is stretched?
If working correctly you will hear the it ratchet out to the correct position and inner cable have very little
slack when throttle is in idle position

Is the cable still connected at the trans end?
When you pull on the inner cable you should feel tension of the valve in the trans

 

The cable is still connected. It doesn't ratchet out at all at WOT...it doesn't move just stays in. It has about an inch and a half slack at idle. The TV cable does have a spring/spacer on the end of it...after the connector...i guess to take up slack...not sure what it's there for. You think it might be stretched?

 

Here is what I'm working with.

 

See the thin metal plate bolted to your plenum?
Remove that and bolt your throttle cable bracket directly to the plenum. Its not needed on your car unless you have a throttlebody spacer or a NOS plate.

 

Here's what a stock, correctly adjusted TV cable, correctly adjusted cruise control and throttle cable looks like when the throttle is closed. There are subtle differences, but the geometry should be the same.



Comparing photos, it looks like your TV cable assembly is missing the gold-colored, half-round adjusting/lock tab thingy.

Also, your TV cable has way too much slack in it. Because if the way your adjuster is pushed all the way back, I'd have to agree with vetteoz that the TV cable is no longer attached to the TV in the trans. The little hook thing in the trans might also be damaged.

The thin plate that TTOP350 mentions moves the entire linkage mounting forward. This plate effectively changes the lengths of the cable throws in the direction opposite of what you need. Remove this plate and locate the linkage bracket in the stock position.

 

Hello, I have a 88 trans am 305. The car was driving just fine until today. Today the car would not shift out of first gear. This is an automatic transmission. Have any ideas at to what might be the source of this problem?

 

your 2nd gear band is smoked. Your best bet is to get it rebuilt with a tci transmissions 700 r-4 rebuild kit or monster in the box kit to avoid any other future problems. -------- J case does your trans make an odd sound when in park?

 

Is that normal given a newly built trans?

 

Is that band a band that can be replaced using jack stands or is this a matter for a shop?

 

I will remove that plate and see what happens....the guy who owned it before me...13 years ago...had NOS on it. Never even really noticed it till now. When I move the bracket to it's original location will that affect the throttle cable at all?

Don't really notice any noise in Park...what kind of noise are you talking about...ticking, clunk, whining??

As far as i can tell the TV cable is still hooked up inside the tranny....I can feel the valve move when i put tension on the cable.

Yes it will, you will prolly be able to have the throttle open all the way.
The TV cable on your car is a aftermarket setup. I'm not sure Y the heck that spring is on it.

 

Shop for a 2-4 band replacement. Also check your tv cable.

 

The spring mechanism is from Sonnax. It is for if you have too early of a part throttle shift. This makes the part throttle shifts later and without pulling the TV cable out at WOT.

 

Lastest update...I took off the plate it had on there and finally was able to properly adjust the TV cable. For about the first 10 miles or so it was starting to shift better. The more it shifted the better it got. 1st gear was shifting around 3000 RPMs. The same for the rest of the gears. I was going around 50 MPH and went WOT...it downshifted great....and that's where it starting going downhill. After that it went back to redline shifting. I adjusting the TV cable both forward and backward to see if it made a difference, but it didn't. Doesn't matter where I adjusted to....it keeps wanting to shift at redline....in between 4500-5000 RPMs. Any ideas??

 

Today i came across a very similar problem. Been shifting kinda high lately and all of a sudden today it wouldnt get out of 1st gear. Got it towed home, did some research (considering the PO rebuilt the trans) and was told to slam the throttle a dozen times while the car was off. Just took it around the block and it shifted perfectly out of 1st, does this indicate my TV linkage is no good? Need the car running for school ASAP! Please help!!
