Difference between TH700-R4 and 1983 TA transmission (TH2004R??)

I'm getting an '83 Trans Am this week to replace my now deceased '86 'Bird (blown motor) and I was wondering what the differences were between the transmissions. I'm not exactly sure what's in the 83 TA, but I know it's not the 700. Which tranny is it and what's the big difference between that and the TH700?

In 83 Gm used two different auto tranny's the TH200c, and the 700-r4, Sorry it wasn't the 2004r, That one was later. There is 2 ways to tell a 200c, the tanny pan is stamped with the word (METRIC) and the tailshaft is one piece with the case. The 200 is also 3 inches shorter then the 700. So keep the drive shaft you can use it if decide to put a TH350 tranny in your car.

But the 200C doesn't have OD, right? So, if the car has OD, then I have a TH700R4. Cool.

It would have been my guess that it was a 700, The 200's were mostly in the 4cyl cars, in 83.
