Noise from T-5

Guys, some advice from the experts, if you please.

I have an 88 IROC wit 5.0 TPI and the 5-speed. The car has about 120k miles on it. Here's the problem. The tranny makes a wierd scraping noise when:
1. - It's COLD outside and the car has been sitting for a long time (in other words, the tranny is cold).
2. - Only in 5th gear.
3. - Only over about 45-50 mph.

Once the thing gets warmed-up, the noise goes away. It did this before and I took it to a local trans shop and they pulled the thing and told me they put in new bearings. That fixed it for about a year or so. Charged me like $800 for the work. It's making the noise again.

What do you think is wrong, how can it be fixed to stay fixed for more than a year, and how much should it cost me?

Thanks in advance.

I have the same kind of grinding/scrapping noise, Only have it when the clutch pedal is not depressed.. I think in my case, its the idler/throwout bearing.. Maybe check that out??

Thanks, but that can't be it. The clutch is new. New throwout bearing and new pilot bearing.

I also had the noise you mentioned and it was a worn pilot bushing. When I had a new clutch put in, they replaced the bushing with a bearing. That all works fine now.

The noise I hear is coming from inside the trranny, and only in 5th gear, at speed, and when cold.

Sounds like either it's low of fluid (5th gear is up highest in the trans, back in the extension housing, so it runs dry first), or it wants a new 5th gear set.
