non thirdgen tranny Q

i have an '81 GMC truck with a 350C trans. I have a couple of questions about it. First, I hooked up a tach last week, and I expected the cruise RPM's at 60mph to be 2500+/-, just from driving it and listening to the engine. The tach says 1800 RPM @60 with the TC locked up, and even at WOT the RPM's stay below 2300. It runs good, and has good power for a 2 barrel 305.

Does this cruise RPM sound right for a 1/2 ton pickup? The last one I had cruised at 3K (76 K5 Blazer), and I think the tach is right.

My other question has to do with the shift points of the tranny. I said earlier that it never revs over 2300 at WOT. That's fine, since it's matched to the 305's torque cam, but it's got a 350 in it's future that will want to rev a lot more than that. How can I Change the shift points at WOT?

Oh yeah... Has anybody used the Transgo kit for this transmission? What did you think?

One more thing... the tires are about 28 inches tall.

"Special Beater Edition" ROTFLMAO!!!

Anyways, if you have tall gears that would be about right with those tires. Let me ask you this: Does it 'feel' right? That is in simple terms what it should be like when shifting at the correct time for the combo a vehicle has. In the future if you need to raise the WOT points you will be looking at governor recalibration but I wouldn't mess with it until then. You also likely have a L/U which drops R's down too. Is there a wire going in on the drivers side, pointing up? That is it.

Yep, it has a lock up. I have it hooked up to a toggle switch. It feels right for the current combo. When I put the 350 in, I'll have a tranny shop mess with the shift points. Transfixleo, what do you think of the Transgo recalibration (?) kit for the 350C? Should I have a shop put it in, or would I come out better doing that myself? I don't have much experience with autos. I put a B&M (I know, screwed up) shift kit in the 700 in my camaro, and now it shifts very high (around 4000 if I play with the gas). I don't know if I screwed that up or if it was already like that.

The 350C Reprogramming Kit is allot easier to install than the 700 and it has the exact same features of the 350 version, which took some work to accomplish. I remember talking to TransGo about whether they were going to come out with one but at the time they cited the declining sale of O/H kits for this unit that indicated not enough demand. I'm glad they changed their mind on this as if you want a 350 instead of an O/D, I think it is a good setup to use the 350C unit.
