Tremic TKX

Been looking at doing a 5 speed swap on my 87 z28. It has a 383 stroker and supposed built 700r4. I have been looking at ditiching the 700 for a 5 speed. What are your all thoughts on the Tremic TKX?

Re: Tremic TKX

Most people go for 6 speeds these days but I am an old fart and put a TKO600 in my IROC. My IROC was an original 5 speed and the TKO fit quite well without using the factory canted 5 speed bell housing. My winter project is putting a TKX in my 73 RS Camaro and all I can say is I wish the TKX was available when I was at that stage for my IROC build. More compact at the top of the trans and although it is not on the road yet, shifting it with car on jack stands feels smoother than the TKO. Read good reviews on
the shifting so I am excited to get it on the road. I think TKX would be a great choice for a conversion if you don't have the desire to row through 6 gears.

Its not the fact of rowing through 6 gears. Its cause of the price of the 2. I can get a new tkx for the price of a used t-56.

Re: Tremic TKX

I had a TKO600 in my 89 Iroc/383 and loved it! ....I'm currently LS swapping my 88 Iroc and I have a t56 ready to go in. I loved the TKO, but you've gotta be honest with yourself about gearing. To me, that's the bottom line, hands down. With a 3.73 gear in the LS1/88 Iroc, I really wanted 6th gear. On the taller geared 89/383, 5 gears was enough, BUT.....you could see how a 6th gear woulda been nice. All about the gears and how you'll use it.

TKX appears to be a GREAT trans from what I've read though.

Yes from what I have read yes it sounds like a great trans. I have done a 6 peed swap in my 2000 gti when i daily drove it so I understand the 6th gear. This car by no means is gonna be a daily it will be strickly a cruiser with some fun. The rear gear i am going with for now is Borg Warner with helical diff and 3.70 gears.

Re: Tremic TKX

The 6-Speed/ T56/ TR6060 Transmissions have multiple Gear-Set (Ratios) options; like the T5 Transmissions.

If you are looking to benefit from the 6th-Gear (Double-Overdrive)...
You will need to know what the Gear-Ratio of your current 5th-Gear is...
and you will need to choose a T56/ TR6060 Transmission with a numerically lower 6th-Gear Ratio.

For example, you could have a current 5th-Gear Ratio of 0.68:1 or 0.63:1...
and end up purchasing a T56/ TR6060 Transmission with a 6th-Gear Ratio of 0.67:1 or 0.62:1.
This situation would be of no improvement/ no additional benefit for Overdrive.

A 6th-gear Ratio of 0.50:1 would be Ideal...
unless the current 5th-Gear Ratio is in the Low-80s or High-70s.

Research the T56/ TR6060 Gear-Sets before you purchase the Transmission.
