S-10 torque converter?

hey guys i have heard rumor of runnin an S-10 torque converter in my 86 700R4 tranny. the converter is out of an L35 4.3 V6 application. it is said to stall between 2000 and 2200 depending on torque output. i have a fresh rebuilt 305 with ported intake, headers, and a 214/224 LPE cam. i would like to run this converter, what do you guys think? are any of you currently running this setup? thanks for the info.

Yep you have it right about the stock S10/15 converters. Yea that stall sounds good for your setup but expect it to stall around 17/1800rpm. As long as its a 4.3 converter your good to go.

I have the converter you're talking about.

On my setup it stalls around 2200-2300 since I make ALL low-end with this cheesy peanut cam.

I would say with a nice dual plane intake, that cam and stall would be a killer combo. I'm not sure how it will do on TPI but I assume it will do just fine. My '85 IROC has killer low end.

I'm upgrading to the LT4 cam soon, so I hope to reap the benefits of this converter, which stalls WAY too high right now.

Also, you're never going to get that to run right on the stock chip. Hop over to the DIY-PROM board and read up on how to make your own.

I'm running the 4.3 astro converter in mine. I think it stalls more like 23/ 2400 with my setup. I'm still wondering how long it will last though. Local trans rebuilder I know recomended it. I bought it from him rebuilt, all of 110.00 worth. I've been running it 2 months now, no track use yet but I've hammered it pretty hard several times. Still working, so we'll see.

Do you know what year Astro it was for? It may have been for the new ones, I don't think they ever put the 2000 in the old Astros.

In the old body style they only put the 1050 RPM stall and the 1397 RPM stall.

I'm sure you won't hurt it, unless you're making 500 hp.

Im not too sure about that. A few years back my parents got and an older astro van with a blown engine 4.3 4bbl probably 85/86ish for $100. It went through a 400sbc swap and it stalled @1700rpm with the stock converter. I dont think it got another tranny. I know for sure we just poped an engine in and thats where it stalled at. I do know in the mid 80's higher stall converters were stock on small trucks, although my 86 S10 blazer was a 2.8 it had a converter that stalled @2000 rpm. Gm did some funkey things and are still doing them, so there probably no way to be sure what the stall is until you put it in.

My cam has a pretty lumpy idel, and the conveter he sold me works great. He told me this one or one for a vette. The vette one was 389.00. I don't know what year astro van this was remaned for, but I'll see if I can find out.

Well I changed the converter in my '92 and it was the DHCF code. The "H" meaning 1050 RPM. So yes I'm sure it was 1050 RPM. The S-10 converter I got is a DBLF code. The "B" meaning 2025 stall speed rated on a 4.3.

They changed alot of stuff in the Astro in '90. So maybe they put a higher stall in the old-old ones.
