700-R4 Swap to 2nd Gen!

well, my motor went on my other 87 I own about a year ago & the car has been sitting ever since. Now i had to get rid of the car and i gave my trans to my friend who owns an 81 Camaro with a TH-350. hes swapping it out and i dont want him to **** it up cause im makin a big investment here. the problem is that i have an Elec Speedo and he has a cable driven. I need to know if we would be able to buy a conversion kit to have the 700-R4 use a cable speedo cause if he screws up the trans im gonna stab him. i need any info on this swap i can get. links, books, posts, magazines. pretty much anything i can get. thanks in advance.

Just go to a junkyard or a trans shop and get the drive and driven gears, and sleeve for a mech speedo. it'll all bolt right in. You need to know what the tooth count needs to be for the peticular rear end gear ratio and tire size. they have a chart here

http://www.tciauto.com

Here is a direct link to the speedo gear page

http://www.tciauto.com/tech_info/speedo_gears.htm

Put your info in the boxes down the page.

Hey Let me know how that swap works out! I have an 83 700R4 out of a Camaro and I wanted to put it in my 2nd Gen 77 Firebird. Right now I'm trying to find what shifter to use since the original TH-400 was a 3-speed and the 700R4 is a 4-speed.

87, you might also want to take a look at this site. http://smokemup.com/tech/transmission/700r4/700r4.cfm
They have the wiring diagram to hook up the tq converter lockup if you scroll down a few lines.
Does your friends car have a dual bolt pattern flywheel??? If not you may need to replace it but most likely it is dual pattern.
Good Luck with the swap!

hey, well here's the update. 3" off the drive shaft move the crossmember back 3" and it all works out fine. only little hang-up were havin is connecting the TV cable to the carb. goin to the pick-a-part tomorrow mornin to pick up the little stud from a 3rd gen witha carb since my friend lost his. if ur running full length headers its a bitch tryin to get the tranny cooler lines back on the tranny. guess thats about it. pretty straightforward swap after gettin the B&M Megashifter for 70-81 ( can be used with a 4 speed after removing a pin and 2 c-clips) and the Painless wiring for the TC lock-up. seems u need to plug one of the valve bodies with a fitting. picked it up at pep boys other ones u can just leave the other 2 but we opted to plug them off too instead of just leaving the connectors/sensors or whatever they are in there since they wont be used.
