1987 IROC 700R4

OK, my 1987 Iroc with 120,00 miles has now started to slip in 1st and wont change into other gears until high RPM's say 4,000 rpms. I want to keep it stock and I only have a few transmission shops around my area AAMCO, and a few mom and pop shops. I have been told by AAMCO that "parts for 700R4's are very hard to find and when you do are very expensive $4,000.00 to rebuilt and R and R. The days of $2,000 rebuilds are long gone"" I have also been quoted any where from $2,200 to $3200 depends on what we find wrong once we get it torn apart. Real world what should I expect I have seen on line rebuilt for $2,100 but then shipping and R and R. I don't have the ability to rebuilt and R and R myself. The statement from AAMCO seems untrue to me.

Thanks for any insight,
Robin in Destin ,FL

You can buy a new stock replacement 700R4 from multiple places (Summit Racing, Jegs, Speedway Motors, Monster Transmission, etc…) for between $2000-$3500.
Are you able to remove and install a tranny yourself?

Pass on those options.

1A. Call FTI Performance in Deland, FL, ask for Dalton (Tell him I sent ya) and see what he can do for you (sell you a THM700-R4 and return your Core).
1B. Only if Dalton can not help you, try RPM Transmissions also in FL.

-OR-

2. Call ProBuiltAutomatics (Member PBA here) Dana for a Rebuild kit, and take the extreme time and detail to research and learn to do it yourself.
Most likely mistakes will be made, money wasted and repeating steps will have to occur (also tons of bad info out there).

I would avoid all of those places for Throttle-Valve Transmissions (THM700-R4 and THM200-4R).

They should not really be a specialty, but they realistically are if you want a High-Performance Unit that actually lasts.

I have more Options to offer if you really want to get into Freight sending Transmissions back and forth.
Many, many great THM700-R4 Specialist in other states.

Let me know (I used to be one)!

Thank you! I see RPM Transmissions is located in Tallahassee that's only an hour and a half from me.
