Yes, at the manifold, butt not at the Y-pipe. If the car was carbed, there was a valve there, about an inch thick or maybe a bit more; if TPI, it was just the valve "body", as a spacer. Where that met the manifold it was flat, butt it was a ball flange to the pipe.
