Detent cable length

Info. 1985 trans am 5.0. Tpi. How long should the detent cable be? My car isn't shifting until it gets up to 3500 rpm. I recently replaced the detent cable with one that is 41.7 inches in length part atp y-228

Re: Detent cable length

I don't think the overall length is as important as it being adjusted correctly. Did you adjust it as the manual says?

Re: Detent cable length

If u are not shifting until 3500 rpm U must have a hard shift into next gear. The weigths of the trans governor may need updating or perhaps a spring has broken.
I did not use the manual to adjust the cable. A fellow on this site gave an excellent method for adjusting it.
