I am changing the speedo gears and noticed some play in the output shaft, how much up and down, and in and out play should there be???????

 

It looks like a lot beacause it's supported by the driveshaft yolk and the bushing in the tail housing. (If it's an automatic) There is no way to check the play without disassembling the trans and checking the bushing clearances. Yours is probably alright.
