How to start a 700r4 that's been sitting a while??

Hey guys! Any way to prep a 700r4 that's been sitting for quite some time? It's a '91 700r4, and has been sitting for about a year. Should I just put it in and fire the engine up? Should I change the fluid/filter first? Should I drain the TC (that'll take a while, eh)? I guess I'd put the TC at an angle in a drainpan. Should I put new fluid/filter in, and spin the TC by hand to "work" the fluid pump to send fluid thru the trans?

Would all the old fluid be sitting in the pan? The trans was supposedly "good" at it's last run, I don't want to ruin it by running it dry.

Thanks!

If it were me I would go right through it but If it is OK and the oil looks good I would do the fluid and filter and also install a TransGo Shift Kit or Reprogramming Kit. To drain what you can from the converter, put it hub down and let it drain overnight. You won't get it all out but it will do.

Yea what Leo said, but for sure change the front pump seal and tailshaft seal, If your tranny is fairly empty IE you changed the filter and the converter is fairly empty your looking 10/11qt's to fill it.
