Did my TC or tranny die? How do I tell?
Did my TC or tranny die? How do I tell?
I was on my way to work this morning and nailed it from a stop sign. The car spun up like normal but right after shifting to 2nd (high rpm shift) it stopped pulling. The TC is a cheap one I bought two years ago before I knew better, but it has functioned until now. The tranny (OE, never rebuilt as far as I know) has shifted the same since installation with this converter and has never slipped, although the shifts are a little soft - which from what I've read is pretty normal for a stock 700R4. After the incident this morning, when I shift to any gear including reverse, revving the motor barely moves the car, but it does move slightly. Is there a way to determine what went wrong? I'm hoping it was the $90 cheapo TC rather than the tranny. If it is the TC, what should I look for or do before reinstalling the tranny to make sure the TC didn't cause further damage?
Thanks in advance,
Shawn

Quite often... if a torque converter goes bad, the effects on the tranny are detrimental. Bits and pieces of metal are scattered throughout the transmission by the time every gear is slipping which causes catastrophic damage to the pump, clutches, and VB. Of course this is only a guess without actually looking inside. Wish I could offer a more positive assumption. Good luck.
