The Haynes General Motors Automatic Transmission Overhaul Manual: This has pictures of every step in a rebuild job. At Amazon.

ATSG: There are two books, one general and one who list the updates/modifications. Instead of pictures it has drawings that may show the details better. A good compliment to the Haynes manual.

None of these books will give you a in-depth explanation of how the 700r4 works. (the Haynes book has a general section of auto-trans operation)
What I really miss are hydraulic flow charts for every gear, that would make it easier to understand how things works. (ATSG only shows the Park position)

Amazon also has a new book "Turbo Hydra-Matic 700R4" by Ted Robinette, but it's not available yet.
