couple of questions about borg warner rears

i have a couple of questions about borg warner rears.
1. are they all 9bolt rears?
2. how do i know if i have one(if it is not 9 bolt)?

another question is: what is all that crap on my posi unit? i took the cover off today and there are these two things on the one side of the posi( the bigger side you look in). one is like a little circle(looks amost like a clutch). the other thing is right next to it. it looks just like a peice of metal. please help if you know about this. thanks.

I dont know that much, but all borg warner rears are 9 bolts. The 10 bolts do have a clutch style posi so that may be what you are seeing, but someone else will have to answer that for sure.

Don't forget, the Borg-Warner resrs for thirdgens are 9-bolts! THat means 9 bolts in the cover and 9 bolts in the ring gear!

Actually if I recall correctly people refer to them as 9 bolts but they only actually have 8 ring gear bolts. I have not counted but I think I remember that being discussed.

No one has ever adequately explained whether the "N-bolt" nomenclature comes from the number of bolts on the ring gear or the number of bolts on the rear cover.

10-bolts have 10 on both (at least the 7.5/7.625 ones do). I have never opened a 9-bolt so I'm not certain about those.

I dont know but doesnt the 12 bolt have 14 cover bolts or something? Dont quote me on that one, I am asking. I think someone said something like that. Either it had 14 ring gear bolts or cover bolts. That or either I just got a couple of conversations totally mixed up.

Well, I'm looking at a picture of a 12-bolt gasket and it has 12 bolt holes.

GM does have a 14-bolt rear, you know. And according to my sources, both versions (9.5" and 10.5") have 14 bolts in the cover and 12 in the ring gear.

Borg Warner 9 bolt rears have 9 bolts on the cover and 8 bolts on the ring gear.
