Does this damage the 700R4?

Guys-

My car is an A4 w/ 94,000 original miles on it...

Gear Box reads: [P] [R][N][OD][D][2][1]

Sometimes when I cruise around town, I'll put the car in [2], so that the car stays in the 2000-3000 RPM range when I do 30-35mph... and when I decelerate (let my foot off the gas) the Flowmasters will crackle and pop (I love that sound!)... is it hard on the engine / tranny to be going around at those RPMs?

Usually I drive around in [D], but being a 305, I don't get the popping / crackling sound unless I can get the motor near 3000 RPM...

Additionally, a friend of mine told me I can manually downshift from [2] > [1] to slow the car down, and get the popping and crackling sound... and it makes the transmission slow the car down... is this ok? Does it cause additional wear on the tranny?

Thanks

Cool.. what about driving around at 2500-3000 RPM, is that rough on the engine?

well it puts more strain on the engine, its not exactly the best thing to do but you can do it

I have an 88 iroc with 5.7 and a 700r4. I drive around shifting gears left and right. Ive been doin this for awhile now and i have seen no problems at all. the engine has over 116000 miles on it too. I use the trans for braking also. I love hearing the engine roar in 2nd gear too. Especially when u get on it until 40 mph or so and then get off it. OH BOY THAT SOUNDS GREAT!!!!!!!!!

I'm not positive, but I thought transfixleo said, that manually shifting will put some strain on the tranny due to the line pressure or something I believe, in D is when it's at correct line pressure. Maybe he can clear some things up.

Yeah!!

Man, when I get it up to like 2500 RPMs+ and let off the gas... the sound is AWESOME as the engine comes down...

I just don't want to do it too often if it wears the tranny down...

If you're in a higher gear and you downshift. With the throttle closed, TV pressure is at minimum and so the downshift is soft with lots of slippage.
