my new tranny wont shift out of 1st gear
my new tranny wont shift out of 1st gear
i jus put my new tranny in and it wont shift from 1st any ideas its a 700 r4 with trans go shift kit i check the govoner it looks good please help
Did you run this transmission before the kit?
This happened to me once and found it had a governor for a 2.8 in it (light with rectangular cut outs in the outer weights).
Could be many other things too. Is the tv cable adjusted right?

Did you bend the govonor cover at all. The covor is what sets the clearence for the govonor, so if it's not on all the way, or is dented it might cause wierd problems with the govonor. I ran into this problem once before after a rebuild, all I did was change the govonor and slammed the hell out of the gas and I finally got it to shift out of first, car hasn't come back since, Also the govonor appeared to be perfectly fine the valve was moving. You might also want to try putting some lube guard to it, or one of those additives that free up valves, but if that doesn't work it's time to pull the valve body and check every valve and make sure it's free. Make sure your band didn't fall off the anchor, because i've done that once or twice and you'll never get 2nd or 4th if that happens, you can get third however, so if you want to rule that drive your car around and bring it up high in the rpms and make sure it doesn't shift to 3rd. If the band fell off the ancor don't worry you can still get it back on without removing the transmission you jsut have to remove the valve body.
To adjust the TV Cable skip the book method and do this: Press the 'D' shaped lock button on the adjuster and loosen the cable setting (The black housing that the metal cable is in will move forward). Now, have someone floor the gas pedal while you check to see if the throttle plate is open all the way. Usually they are off a little and will wiggle. Do whatever you have to do to get it open solid. Now, with the pedal still floored, press the 'D' button and pull the cable casing (the black tube) back as hard as you can (putting maximum tension on the metal cable) and release the button. You now have the engine, tranny and gas pedal all in sync at WOT. Mark the cable casing so if for some reason it gets moved you can know where to put it again. The problem with the 'self adjust method' is that it bends things and puts them permanently out of whack. It is also the full TV setting, which is theoretically what the GM method does.
Same happened to me today when I took the car for the first test drive after installing TransGo Shift kit, Corvette servo and .500 boost valve.
My first thought was that the servo seals had been misplaced, but when I got home and checked the idle pressure while the engine still was running, it was ca 3/4 of full TV, same reading that I get if the TV cable is disconnected.
I was then pretty sure I had a stuck TV valve although I had tested all valves for free operation before installing the valve body.
Stopped the motor and let it sit for a while. When I fired it up again the pressure was back to normal idle (ca 70psi).
I shifted through all gears and pressure looked normal.
Took it out for another drive and now it's shifting like it should..!..?...
Don't know what happened, maybe air was still in the system /valvebody.

I had a simular problem not to long ago. After checking the TV linkage, pump, pressure, governor, lines, and everything else I could with and around the tranny, it turns out that the problem was the catalytic converter. It was the stock converter and it went bad. The excessive backpressure threw things all out of tune and kept me from shifting. Its worth checking.
You also might check the pump by disconnecting a cooler line to see if the fluid is flowing. Gool luck.
