'84 Posi is shot, replacing it TODAY with an open carrier- any quick tips/warnings?
Well, looks like I nuked my '84 axle's posi (really an Eaton gov-lock). I got a slight popping out of it for the past two days that has now become a "BANG" whenever I make a turn. By leaning out my driver's door, and making a tight left turn, I actually saw the tire appear to pop out about 1/4"! I did some poking, and found out that I had my e-brake cables adjusted incorrectly. I was always getting drag on both tires, that was probably screwing up up the posi when I took turns. Dammit.
So, since I've got work & college, I can't be doing major work to the axle, so I'm going to put in the open carrier from my original '86 3.42/open/drum axle- good thing I left it in the backyard!
Any problems with this swap? I've heard of guys just bolting the SLP take-off in, without changing bearings or re-adjusting backlash/preload; this should be the same thing, right?
oh and where the heck would I find new ring gear bolts? I know I'm not supposed to reuse ring gear bolts; can I just hit up a Pep Boys? And does anyone know if they're metric bolts for an '84 ring gear?
Thanks!!

Well; nevermind. The lock bolt on my old axle snapped; I can't get the pin out to get my axleshafts out to get the open carrier out.
So I'm left with this popping posi. Do me a favor and check out my newer post...
