changing 2.73 to 3.73

I have a 89 rs posi rear with 2.73 gears and I am wanting to go to the 3.73 gears. Will I have any problem with the posi unit.

I would like to install them myself with same carrier and housing, but I dont have the guages. I though about just putting the shims back as the were, but am afraid of messing the gears up.

What is a good price to pay to have them installed. I can remove the rear If that is cheaper and easyer.

You will need a new posi. If you have 28 spline axles you can buy one for around 100 from www.slponline.com Oh, and it should make a heck of a sotp difference from 2.73 to 3.73.

Yes, the lower (higher numerically) you go the better accleration and less gas mileage. From what I have heard most people dont loose a ton on gas mileage from a gear swap, but that is a large difference so you might loose a bit on mileage.

Why Would I have to change to a new posi. Cant I get a gear from summit to fit my posi. It says for a 3.08 and numerically lower carrier. This should work. The posi and axels are in the same rear.

Yes, your right. If you got the stock style gear you would need a new posi, but they make gears that you can use your posi with. I have a 9 bolt and they dont make gears like that for it so I just didnt think about that.
