27 Spline or 30 Spline 700-R4??
27 Spline or 30 Spline 700-R4??
I am in the process of building an '84 Camaro Berlinetta and need some help in the trans dept!! Is there any way to visually tell if the 700-R4 that came out of the car has a 27 spline or 30 spline input shaft? I think the changeover was made sometime during 1984. I need to know before I start ordering parts for the rebuild. Thanks in advance!
well the only way i know of is the # on the tranny and i have no idea what it is. but they also say you can tell by looking at them the 30 spline is bigger but unless you have them both side by side i think it would be a little hard to tell. i had to learn the hard way i order my TC for a 30 and then when i went to pick up my tranny i was dumb and said i needed a 84 or newer what i should have said was a 85+. slaped my TC on it fit stabbed the tranny started it up and went no where but leaked a hell of alot of fluid. but i got lucky my bro bought a 86 Z and then sold it to me so there was my 30 spline
but the change happed in mid 84 but you definetly want the 30 spline and try and get i think its 87 or 88 + tranny thats when the th700R4's were the best

I believe the 30-spline input shaft came out in 84 1/2 models.
The "clock" which is cast into the pump cover will tell you when it
was made. BTW, whatever became of the fine art of counting the splines?

lol yeah just count splines hehe, 87up are the good ones, i think 93-up are the electronic ones, so we have 87-92 to use without electrical fabbing,
84 1/2 was when they were supposed ot have changed input to 30 spline, yeah,
if you look along the pan rail edge, theres a flat space im pretty sure towards the tail of the tranny and it has stamped in numbers and the first digit is the year, so 4 = 84 and 5 = 85.
good luck
