Spider Gears and mini-spool

I have an 84 with a stock rear. The spider gears are shot. I have a mini-spool but it says that it can only be installed in an "open" rear end. The question I have is........does a posi rear have spider gears, or only an open rear? Thanks in advance

For a 7.5, 7.625 and a 7.75 rear, the mini spool requires an open carrier for installation.

There are several different types of posi units. One uses a cone system with a few springs. Another one has spider type gears with a funky "S" shaped spring. The zexel torsion is a whole other animal that can tell from a mile away. I think that you are asking if you can use this mini spool with your carrier. If you are, you can.. You only have the spider gears with no other springs or gizmo's in the carrier right? If so then you can use your stock carrier with the mini spool.
