700R4 Disassembly Help
700R4 Disassembly Help
My son & I are totally disassembling his 88 GTA 700R4 to find the cause of no 3/4 gear. I'm kind of stuck at this point of disassembly. How is item #680, spring, lo&reverse clutch suport retainer, suppose to be removed. I think this is what I'm trying to remove. At first, it looked like a broken snap ring to me , wedged under the support assembly ( between support & case). One end looks like a snap ring laying flat & the other end looks like a snap ring laying on edge. Any advice or photos would really help. I'm sure I'll have more questions later.
Thanks, FJK

I use a wide blade screw driver, put it between the case and snap ring and turn it then grab the snap ring with needle nose pliers and work it out of the case. The other thing you are seeing may be the anti clunk spring, it sticks up a little in this area too, be sure to put it back in during reassembly.
Yeah, use a big, flat blade screwdriver with a notch cut into
the side. After you get the blade under the snapring, twist the
screwdriver to hook the snapring in the notch and pull toward you. Work around the case until it is free.

The part I am talking about is refered to as a spring, not a snap ring. If we are talking about the same thing, do you get the screwdriver under the end that is laying flat, or the end that is laying "on edge"?

Yes sir, you are correct about what I am talking about, but the GM service manual refers to it as a spring; specifically item #680, Spring, Transmission (Lo & Reverse Clutch Support Retainer). I didn't name it, I just need further help on how to remove it. Hope you can help. Thanks FJK

Finally figured this one out for myself. This little device indeed acts as a spring, which applies tension against one of the spline cutouts in the support. To remove the support, use a large scewdriver on the end of the "spring" that is sitting on edge. Compress the spring by pushing the edge end toward the flat end of the spring. IOW, like collapsing a "U". With the tension off the spring, the support slides out. The spring is then merely lying on the bottom of the trans case. Hopes this helps someone.
