Govenor "theory"

I'm trying to figure out what to do with very early shifting 700r4. (3000rpm at WOT, 4th gear at 27mph...)
First step is to try to understand the govenor....
Can anyone explain in more detail how it's working?

I understand that the heavy outer weight (1)and later the lighter inner weights (2) spins out and push the valve piston.
But why are both springs (3) and weights used?
The Transgo kit even show the use of different springs on each side.

Is there a certain method to use when adjusting the shift points?
Do you replace weights, springs or both?

As far as I can tell the line pressure will also affect the rpm at which the govenor valve is opening. Is this correct? If so, does it mean that the shift points will change if you install a larger boost valve?

I've attached an image of a TH350govenor in case anyone is interested, the 700r4 looks very similar

I have found that making the inner weight lighter will make wide open throttle shift points later and part throttle fourth gear shift points later.
To keep part throttle shift points the same weaker springs need to be used as the inner weights are made lighter.
The weight of the outer weights doesn't seem to effect much.
The springs seem to effect second and third part throttle shift points. stronger makes it shift earlier and weaker makes it shift later.
As soon as the engine is started and the torque converter turns the trans pump the governor valve moves out and the springs compress, the tension on the springs and the weight of the flyweights act to move the governor valve inward.

Thanks Jay!

What you say sound logical.
I start to understand why it can be difficult to get this adjustment right...:-)
Assume I start with lighter weights then. Those th350 weights seems pretty light. Are they compatible with the 700r4 govenor?

I include another image series that shows (left to right) the various stages from fully open (zero speed) to fully closed (high speed) govenor bleedoff valve.
The valve is only directly affected by the inner weights. Which in turn is pushed out by the outer weighs through the springs.

As far as I know B&M still makes a governor weight kit, or you can go to a shop and ask them for their bad governors (ones they were going to toss) and strip them of their weights and springs. Go from there.

Thanks again!
I'll see if I can get the B&M kit. Things are different over here, the closest trans-shop is 3hrs drive from where I live...:-)

Any chance that I can correct the problem just by using the springs that came with my Transgo kit?

My governor is very difficult to get to, I may have to drop the crossmember. So it would be nice to get it right without too many swaps.

This place sells the governor weight kit. I don't know if he will ship overseas or not.

Look at item #43, about 3/4 down the page. From what I understand TH350 & 700R4 weights are interchangable. I am in the process of "tuning" my shift points as well. I am using a similar kit that I purchased from a local trans shop.
