Does it make a thump? Transmission mount maybe.
Or does it rev then hit second low trans fluid.
Just a few ideas.

I had similar prolems like yours, so I would look at the tranny mount and motor as well. Just got my 85 back yesterday and that made a huge difference from the way I could get in gear to shifting.

Same shift kits are available for 3rd gens, and 1st gens, and 2nd gens...

Did you put the trans in yourself? Did you (or whoever put it in) adjust the TV cable properly? What condition was the original junkyard fluid in? What year is the transmission itself?

What year is the transmission? If you don't know, there's an ID tag located above the pan bolts on the passenger side. Post the # up here.

So the original fluid from the junkyard was good looking? Hm. Was there a lot of metal in the pan when you changed the fluid? Hey, do you still ahve the original junkyard fluid filter from inside the pan?? You could cut it open to see if there's a ton of metal stuck in there. Maybe the junkyard just changed the fluid to make you think you got a good trans.

You mentioned that your tires squeak (is it like the barking sound when you floor it on a fresh paved road?) when you shift, does the tach go up real high? the guy before might have installed a special valve body i heard about that basically revs the engine higher between shifts and thus you do kind of like a burnout (like when you hold it in neutral rev it then throw it into drive)

maybe thats not what you talking about. Good luck with it though
