1st gear lockout
1st gear lockout
Alright guys, another question. This one's a little more down to earth. All the V6 camaro guys i know have the first gear on their 700R4s locked out. I can manually shift into the other gears but not first. Is there a way to bypass this? I bet you get this question all the time, but the guys on the transmission board wouldn't answer
also if anyone wants to buy a front end ground effects piece in pretty good shape, let me know, i got a dark metallic red one with gold racing stripes sitting in my backyard (charleston SC)
thanks

Weird... I can use first on my trans... even on my original transmission, without the shift kit. When you pull the stick back from 2nd, it doesn't downshift?
Nope, can't pull it back any further. My friend has a 2nd gen V6 and it was just a plastic block that kept him from pulling the shifter lower than 2nd, and he was able to cut it out. I don't know what the f*** is with mine, its nothing i can cut out. I haven't looked at it in a while, but I couldn't figure it out.
i remember reading about a similar problem... it turned out, that there was a plastic blocker disabeling you to physicaly move the shifter to 1st, the person cut it out and could shift to first... not shure i understand thats what your problem is.
edit: oops you already tried. guess thats why you read the message before you answer

It could also be that your shift cable (or shift linkage, on the driver's side of the trans pan) is loose or busted. You're saying you can't put the stick in 1st gear at ALL? Even when stopped? That's weird. You might want to ask about this on the trans board.
It's still the stock shifter, right? You should be able to get to first gear with the stick... I never heard of GM blocking that off. If that were the case, your gear selector would read "2 D OD N R P" instead of "1 2 D OD N R P". (My B&M Megashifter reads "1 2 3 D N R P", I'm so glad they did that- to me, it's the way the gears should read!)

Ok, just took off the shifter cover plate or whatever, and like i said there was no block ( I think) but there is a piece bolted up that looks kinda suspicious. Could one of you guys post a picture of what it looks like under your shifter cover so i could compare?

A look probably won't tell you anything... (sigh) Okay, off the top of my head, how to inspect your cable & linkage:
Remove the console cap, disconnect the shift cable from the shifter. See if you can pull the shifter into first with the cable disconnected. If you can't, the shifter is busted. You'll be amazed at how easily the shifter moves with the cable unhooked; this is normal.
If you can, then go underneath the car. Disconnect the shift cable from the trans shift lever. Move the trans shift lever by hand, see if you can get to all of the gears.
If you can get to first, then it's probably the shift cable. Since both ends are now disconnected, work the cable in & out, and "feel" for binding. If no binding, put the shifter in first. Put the trans shift lever into first (swing it all the way down and back). Try to make the cable line up with both the trans shift lever and the shifter connection. If the cable won't line up...
