Get parts while you can guys !
Today I went to the boneyard to pull some parts . I really didn't need any except a rear view mirror . My old one fell off and the metal piece stuck in there and I broke the glass trying to get it out . I had one with a plastic backing from advance but its crappy . ANYWAY , It seems like these parts are just going fast , and the parts that are left are weatherd and arent any good anymore (interior parts) . Something I dont understand , out of the 7 cars I saw today , 6 of these cars , the body WAS NOT in bad shape . I know for a fact one of these cars was brought to the yard complete , it just didnt run . Might have had a blown engine , I dont know . It kinda upset me to see this car today with the back wheels off and the back glass out and part of the interior bucherd up ! But anyway , I was just thinking , next time any of you guys go to the boneyard to get a part and you plan on keeping your car forever or for awhile like me , get parts that you think you might need later on , or small cheap parts ! I pulled that plastic piece ( i think its called door sills ) runs along the bottem part of the door and has a hole for the seatbelt area . I pulled one of these in pretty good shape for $5.00 . It has alot of scratches but if you find one of these it can be painted . I was unable to find my mirror but o-well ! I also saw something I had never seen before . The red Z28 , which I just told you about had a windshield wiper on the rear trunk . I have NEVER have seen a camaro , or firebird with one of these before , do any of you guys have them ?

you know a rear view mirror is a rear view mirror. GM and all car mans. are parts bin plants. everyone grabs from the same piles of parts. just find a mirror you like and/or is like your old one. even a ford may use that same one. Just get the whole thing including the metal part on the windsheild. use a bic lighter to heat it up hot and slide it off, its only glue.

Tell me about it. I went up to the pull a part this past saturday expecting to find the normal 3 to 5 v6 f-bodies up there and there wasn't one there
IROCS and Z's were there mostly but all of them were trashed pretty good. I managed to get about half of what I need to get my 86 on the road. There's another yard that has a s***load of third gen's in it but he's a bit on the pricey side. I only go there if I'm looking for something specific.

we can't save them all. Heck, I am glad some of the well optioned ones make it into the yards. Otherwisewe would never be able to add new options or personalize our own rides. I added the under dash panels to my red 85 and an overhead console to my 86, leather e-brake handles and shift ***** to all of mine, etc, etc. If none showed up in the yards, we'd have to shell out 300-400 bucks for the parts to fix rear hatch pull downs. Yeah, its sad to see some nice ones in the yard but its the nice ones that usually contribute the best parts

Sorry Wayne
I did not mean for my post to sound mean. Just a real head scrather for someone to goto the junkyard just looking for a rear view mirror and then come home empty handed.

:headscratch:
I used to be able to find map light mirrors for old GTO by the dozens! They sell for about $100+ now. I paid like $5 or so.
Special good silver mirrors are hard to come by.
I'm looking for a map light rear mirror (Ford or?) for my Blazer now.
I have a Map light in my 1974 Corvette. It was an option.
I'd have one in my 1967 & 68, but those GTO mirrors are to wide. Early Day/Night (optional!) Camaro mirrors are 10", not 12"

This is one of the reasons why I keep stockpiling parts in the basement; how many guys do you know that have two door windows (one driver's side, one passenger side) in their basement? Well, now you know at least one- me.
And I hate how some guys rip the car apart to get at one part. I've seen so many perfect center console center plates that were snapped in half because some joker wanted the shifter.
Seats will also work from other GM cars... chances are, the GM seats will bolt to our seat rails. (Seat rails are between the seat and the floor, obvoiusly..

GM seats also make nice office chairs. I have a nice black pleather bucket out of a 78-79 aro.
Id like to get a new one with more adjustments but my butt is comfy.

Tip; when you reglue the mount to the windshield, don't have the mirror attached. MAKE SURE YOU GET THE RIGHT SIDE "UP"! Before you scratch the old glue off the windshield with a new single-edge razor blade, take a crayon, and mark the location of the old glue on the OUTSIDE of the windshield. Then use that marking you make as a guide, when you glue the mount to the inside of the windshield.
They sell that glue at auto parts stores; I think it's $3.

Wayne, you said the metal piece got stuck somewhere and broke off; do you mean the square metal "windshield mount" that the rearview slides over? That's locked onto the rearview with an allen-head screw! Bring your busted mirror to a tool store, get the right allen head key to unlock the windshield mount. Then you've got that little square of metal; bring the allen key with you to the junkyard, release the mirror from the windshield mount, and slide the mirror up and off. No windshield breaking necessary!

My 82 Z28 has a back wiper blade. That was the first one I have ever seen also. Im considering haveing it pulled out and pluged when I get a new paint job or I may keep it to have something different really dosent hurt anything.

Why add another hole to leak?
Wayne
MANY mirror kits also have that piece of metal.
Or can always ask at a car glass place.
Getting fresh metal is a real key as is clean surface to adhere.
