C++ Literacy

I am trying to learn the computer language C++ (geeky huh?), but it is very time consuming. I bought one of those "Learn blah blah in 24 hours" books. Have any of you had success with those types of books?
I know this is way off topic, but I thought I'd post this to help out 86V6BIRD. If it helps a fellow V6'er then what the heck, eh?

These will be your best bets in books. Those learn it in 24 second books just dont do the job, and tend to miss a lot of important information. Trust wrox, they are full of information, and explain things very well.

.NET would be the way to go, its more efficient thus far in windows programming. Good place to start is C, then C++, then some VB since most places use it, avoid FoxPro(its evil), learn a *** amount of SQL since database development is a major part of programming. Learn C# and ill say it again, the .NET framework.

Just to help you along to way. Not suer how far you are, or when you last updated your site, but hers some infor anyway.

Hope it helps.

And I guess since I should mention something V6 related.

In about 2-3 months im going to install the borla catback system. My dad had the Borla exhaust on his '97 30th Aniv. and it sounded sweet. Probably going to install a new chip as well. Lets hope all goes smoothly in the financial department to get this goin.

We shall see about a new paint job eventually as well. Since I still have the original white. But its faded into a whitish cream.

okay, i suppose I have a questions to. I my exhaust smells rich. I think it has smelled rich since I took it in for a rune up, which consequently ran for 120$ at golden wrench. :/

I cant tell what it used to smell like before, because its been a few months and I had in tuned right when i baught it.

Also, that popping noise is still there. I thinking it sounds like air is getting into the fuel lines somehow. If thats the case, that cant be good. Not sure how I can check to see what it is. Though, once the engine hits about 200*, it stops. Meybe its just a cold engine thing.

It there anything that I can modify to make the engine have better performace when its cold?

Thanks for any input.

Like "Learn Visual C++ in 24 hours"? I picked that one up, it did the job for me, but I knew C++ already, just needed to figure out the Visual part of it. The wrox books are bitchin', except the guys on the covers always seem to be smirking at me when something goes wrong .NET looks like it'll be a pain in the butt, especially if you're designing an application that has no need of the .NET framework. (Glad they're leaving Visual C++ out of the framework, besides that "Managed" C++ which uses it.)

$120 for a tuneup at "Golden Wrench"? Sounds like they gave you the golden Shaft, you could've done a major tuneup for much less. What did they replace on the car, did they give you a receipt?

Your timing could be way off, that might cause a backfire. Air in the fuel lines gets bled out via the return line, so you're safe there.

yeah, got a reciept. Did plentyful amount of stuff, including timing and sparkplugs, I dont have tghe recipt here at work or id tell you . paid and extra 200+ for the plug wires and such. whole visit costed me about 400+.

Hmm, what kind of tool would i need to reset the timing. Drives me up the wall everytime it pops. Had so many issues with the car at first, which was expected. Now i just want a month of smooth riding before things start bugging me to fix em again.

Wow, those must've been gold-plated wires The MSD Super Conductor 8.5mm's I run are $70. I hope you don't go back! You just need a timing gun to check timing, that's all... you can find 'em for $35-$500, but a $35 one is fine. If you go to http://www.sears.com and search for "timing light", they have a $35 one, and $50 one, a $70 one. (You don't need a dialback timing light, they might come in handy, but I haven't needed one yet.) You could also search for "timing light" at http://www.sunpro.com . The light I have is a Sunpro, it's my dad's, and he's had it since the early 70's- still works like a charm.
