Mechanic says doesn't need spark plugs!

Hey guys,
I was going to have my mechanic install Accel spark plugs and plug wires on my 3.1 V6, but the emissions came out and that the engine ran so good he said that it didn't need it. I already bought the accel crap, but is it worth any extra hp if i put in a chip and redo my intake like i plan to do? Let me know thanks.

Redoing your intake system, and them accell wires should make a difference.

I would say if you have spent the money on parts, put them on and give them a try.

I could probably do them myself with the exception of the front lefthand cylinder, it has the copper tube assembly that might have to be removed. However, I plan on getting a chip, and redoing my intake system. Maybe I will do it myself.

Go buy a handheld sparkplug remover. It's got a T handle on it, and a swivel head at the end....makes everything easy. FIrst time it may take a while on the passenger side, but the second time you ever do it, you'll be able to change them all in 10 minutes.

you do have a 3.1 but not a 3100. the "3100" is a GenIII front wheel drive motor.

your motor is a GenII RWD motor.

just so you know I'm not trying to be a jerk.

I used to be around here for a good 2 years.

you also might want to jus change it to

V6/Auto

since the only v6 after '90 was the 3.1 and the only automatic after '83 was the 700R4/4L60

and since your car is a '92, it's a 4L60. it's just less clutter.

otherwise I'd put:
3100 Gen III SFI
4T60-E Automatic Transmission.

Uh oh, lets not start a fight about sig lines! (Besides, I happen to like seeing 700R4 instead of 4L60. And actually his motor is still a Gen I. Gen II 2.8/3.1's are front wheel drive motors with aluminum heads. Our steel headed rear-wheel-drive 2.8/3.1's are Gen I motors.

How long has it been since the plugs were changed? Over a year? Change 'em. Yeah you might not need to change 'em, but technically, you don't -need- to change your oil after 3000 miles, the motor will still work. You don't need to change your fuel filter, the engine will still work. You don't need to buy name-brand gasoline, you could buy the cheapest stuff you can find, and your engine will still work. You don't need to put tires on the car, the car will still work if you drive it on the wheels. You dont' need any exhaust system, the car will still work. You don't need......

But do beware of one thing with the Accel U-grooves. The terminal on the spark plugs that Accel loves to brag about, because it's "brass!", used to unscrew from the plug. This would cause a misfire condition. Happened to me with a set, when I went back to Pep Boys to look at another set, all those terminals were loose, too. Other guys here (v8 crowd) have had that problem. I only used those plugs once ('95 or '96), so hopefully they fixed it by now, but give those terminals a twist to see if they loosen. Hopefully they don't.

they are gen II to me, I guess, figured they'd be "Gen II RWD"
since in '85 they got serpentine belts, MPFI, and didn't the oiling system change? I can't think of it off the top of my head, but everyone stays away from the 82-84 2.8

Pimprod..I used a ratchet with a spark plug socket, an extension, and one of those universal joints. It's a royal pain in the *** but it works if you get it in just right.

Yeah, they were improved in '85, but they were still called a Gen I block. Gen II are the front wheel drive, aluminum-headed 2.8/3.1 motors, honestly.

Serpentine system didn't come around until 1987.

In '85, the cam became more agressive, the head ports became larger, all of the crank journals became as large as the #3 journal, and MPFI fuel injection showed up. Never heard anything about the oil system changing, though.

can things be interchanged between the gen1 and gen2 block, or is it kinda like the gen 1 SBC and the LT1, lots of modifaction just to get the intake to fit.

Pretty much scenario #2...

The heads are the desirable part with the splayed valve an heart shaped combustion chambers. However, the intake ports are positioned differently which requires the genII intake. Now I think we could get away with using the distributor but the air intake routing is where the problem comes in. FWD Gen II car intake goes over the back of the engine and trans.
