Uh oh....

Well I think the tranny may have breathed its last...

I was heading home from work last night and it was slipping. So I pulled in to the parts store and poured a tube of Lucas Trans treatment in it. Continued home but didn't make it. It wouldn't get out of first gear. Valuing the engine life more than getting home, I parked it at Wal-Mart and had the wife get me. I attempted to adjust the TV cable this morning but it started pouring and I didn't feel like going to work soaked. It's getting towed home now and hopefully it's just a TV cable adjustment that can limp it along for a few more weeks/months.

I thought about going to a 700R4 vs. rebuilding the 200C. Her'es what I came up with

Price to rebuild 200 --- $650-790 (depends on if Torque converter is needed)

Price to rebuild 700R4 --- $900-1045 (depends on if Torque converter is needed)

I would still need to have the torque arm, driveshaft, and crossmember installed so that's extra $$$.

I'm probably going with the 200C.

I was told if your tranny is on its way out and you know your going to loose if, pour brake fluid in it. apparently it is course enough to keep the grit holding the transmission together, but once you park it that transmission is screwed.

Yeah, I would just stay with the 200C, it would be a lot easier to buy a 700R4 car then to change yours over. I am sure you could get a running camaro with this transmission for less then you will pay for the rebuild, and other pieces.

Also , when replacing the tranny , YOU SHOULD always replace the torque converter to . Why ? Metal shavings are in it from the old tranny , not good for new tranny !

Yeah I knew it was gonna die so I've been using the Lucas treatment for about two months. Only thing that makes me think its the cable is because the gas pedal felt spongy. If it felt normal and wasn't shifting I'd be more than willing to bet on the tranny. But with the pedal...

I guess I shouldn't complain. I paid $300 for the car and after sitting off and on for three years finally got it on the road. during the time it sat, I think some of the internal seals dried out thus causing my massive leaks. Then for those 16,000 miles that I did drive it, it probably was always down on fluid due to the leaks.

So in conclusion

Am I pissed? Sort of

Do I hpe adjusting the TV will help? Absolutely

Will the 200C get rebuilt? Yes --it needs it anyway

That is more then likely what took it out then. If your transmission is always a little bit down EX: leaks a lot, it will go out really quick.

I know a lot of us think if we just keep adding fluid it will be okay, but because it is leaking down all the time its still putting that extra little strain on the transmission.

Just out of curiosity what was your little 200C with the 2.8 mated to it like on gas? Just seeing what kind of a difference the OD transmission makes.

Honestly, it wasn't too bad

I'd usually be able to throw $10 in the tank and it would go to and from work (30 miles each way) for two days. I'd then have enough to go to the gas station on the third day.

So approximate if gas is 1.38/gallon

$10/1.38 = 7.246 gallons

120 miles (60 miles a day X 2 days) / 7.246 gallons =16.5 mi/gallon

Not bad -- probably closer to 17 or 18

One day I'll really get it nailed down
