What is the stock idle RPM?

Hello all, I have a 1989 Pontiac Firebird Coupe with a 2.8L... I want to know what is the factory idles RPM? When the engine is warm? 'Cause mine seems so low, moves from 500 to 600RPM when hot... And what could make the engine speed vary continuously like this when it's idle? Thanks!

Mine likes to stay right at 1k but I am still working on droping it down some.

As long as you are under 1k you are fine, I replaced my plugs and that smoothed it out some. Unless it is doing a jump and back from like 300 to 1k I would not worry about it.

Okay but I would like to adjust it at the right RPM like it was when it went out of the factory... And my car seem slower now that it idles at only 500-600RPM. Especially on the start. If someone have the xact number, please help me

Let me try to clear up what I've said... Let's say that I'm at a red light, in D position... I wan't to know the exact RPM I'm supposed to have. Sorry for my bad english again...

Mine stays between 700-750 in drive and 800-850 in park. The fluctuation in idle rpms could be bad vacuum lines, I'd suggest starting with that, then IAC, or EGR could be going south.

yea, i had a vacuum line break (right on the backside of the upper portion of the intake manifold) a little while back and the idle RPMs dropped to about 500 where they are normally about 750 with shifter in D (or OD).

I have a 1987 Camaro Sport Coupe and a 1989 Camaro RS, both with the 2.8L V6 and both have the 5-speed manual T5 transmission. Both idle at 750RPM - rock solid (when warm or started on warm day). 1500RPM when just started on a COLD morning, drops to 1000RPM after a few minutes, then settles to 750RPM after a few more minutes.

Re: What is the stock idle RPM?

Hi, welcome to the boards. Feel free to start a new thread as this one was last replied to in 2003. Anyway, are you sure its idling that high or is it just the tach showing that? Its not uncommon for the tach to be way off.

Re: What is the stock idle RPM?

Still sounds vacuum related to me.
My fuel injected 92 v6 idles @ 1100-1200 cold, 1000 in park or neutral when warm and 750-800 in drive or reverse. If you reset idle, timing … always reset the computer, so the computer can relearn the settings. Every once in awhile right after resetting, from a stoplight, floor it. That way the computer can learn the extreme fuel curve.
