Supercharger Question
Supercharger Question
Hey i was wondering if i could supercharge or turbo my 3.1 L, i wanted to know if it would A) not be worth it (as in i could buy a T/A or convert my car to an 8 for similiar expense,) and B) if it would simply tear apart my engine. Anyway any info on how, if i should, or the cost of doing this would be appreciated.
There are a few threads with a lot info about similar topics that have come up lately.
As far as it being worth it: Power-wise, it's not. You would be able to get the same or more power from a V8 f-body; Money-wise, it's definitely not. You would have to spend a lot to custom fabricate one of these things. A turbo would require a LOT of modifications, as would s SC, and for the same cost, either buy a junker V8 and transplant its engine, or just build a whole new one for your car.
Turboing or SCing one of theses engines would get you roughly the same power as a 305 ci f-body; imagine what you could get if you just built your own V8 and then supercharged that! 2x, 3x, 4x the power!!!
However, for shock value, it would be worth it, as a lot of people talk the talk but never get around to doing it; you could have the first turbo 3.1 in a Camaro! For some people, that in itself would make it worth it.

This has come up lots of times. Like a turbo, you would have to have everything custom made. Most superchargers cost around 3k for about 6-8 psi boost. If you can find a place to mount the supercharger and have a strong customized bracket to secure it, then the rest would be easy from there.
Since the 2.8 and 3.1 are low tech engines, adding a supercharger may give you 20-30 extra hp, but on a V8, it can give you from 50-100 extra hp. Unless you really love the challenge, and want to keep your 6, super charging just means wasted dollars. If I were rich, I would do it for the fun it.
Converting your car to house a V8 would be better if you don't want to spend a lot of money and want the most horsepower possible.
