ignition timing on a 85 2.8 camaro
Hi guys, so here's the deal: On any car of mine I adjust the ignition timing for improved performance, mainly I'm after improving low end torque since I hardly race but want the car to feel stronger off the line, I do this and run higher octane gas if necessary and don't think twice about, you gotta pay to play. Now we get to the camaro which belongs to my GF, it could probably benefit from some more ignition advance, and my GF said go for it, as long as she doesn't have to use the more expensive gas. So has anyone here been able to bump up their timing while still running 87 octane? If so how much more advance and did you feel much of a difference?
And just out of curiosity, those of you that advanced more and use higher octane, how big a dif did you feel? Really I would just be happy if the camaro would atleast feel as peppy as her 90 corsica, its her camaro but I do drive it some and anyway feel that it would just be plain safer if it could get out of its way a little more.

Well if you want performance she will have to run higher the 87 octane. Thats the way I look at it.

you could always advance it to 3.4 timing
TomP would say " Do TomPs full tune up, keep the timing stock, or adjsuted if timing chain not replaced, and the engine will have that much more pep" :nono:

What the thing with the 3.4 timing? I get the feeling there's a joke that I don't get there. I'll do a search on tomp's tune up since a new problem started lastnight.

ah I see, I'm just slow today. I don't think I'll be doing any kind of swap anytime soon, if I did I would see how hard it would be to get a V8 swap to be legal. The 2.8 in there now seems to be pretty healthy and appears to not use much oil, but it hasn't been in regular use yet to really gauge how much oil it might use.
The junkyard we bought it from claims the motor is rebuilt, looks pretty old and greasy for a recent rebuild to me tho.

Yep, TomP would say that!
I run at stock timing, too, never bumped it up at all. I plan one day, whenever that is, to buy all the PROM burning equipment, and increase the timing using the computer. But I've got so much on my list to do before that happens- including rebuilding a 2.8. (Nope, won't be doing a 3.4 swap.)
