on the back of the distributor, there is a 15mm bolt that screws into the engine. It's a pain in the *** to get to , but I used a regular socket, swivel, 6" extension and a ratchet. lossen the bolt and then turn the distributor counter-clockwise to advance, clockwise to retard. Tighten the bolt back down and you're done. Be carfeul though, if it starts to knock when you get on the gas, retard the timing. Would hate to see you blow up your motor.
Oh yeah, I have mine set to about 15 deg. advance. I've found this works really well for with the 87 octane gas($1.59 at arco out here). Had to bring mine back down recently for Emissions stuff, but as soon as I'm done with that, up it goes again.

14* seems to be a good place for most of the V-6's. Mine never ran right at 10*. However, this could mean that you have a lot of stretch in your timing chain.
When you go to advance your timing, make sure you do it properly. Dissconnect the electronic timing control wire . This is a tan wire found in a coil of wires above the heater fan. This tan wire has a plug in it, for this purpose, you must disconnect it to give yourself accurate timing advance. From here use a timing gun. Don't do the ear timing.
Oh yeah, after you do this, tell us what advantages in power you saw.
