Help With Used Radiator Choice

Hey guyz, I got a quick question that I thought all of you on here could help me out with. I'm gonna get a used radiator for my '88 Camaro b/c mine is bad. So I found two people who are willing to sell me their old ones. One wants $50 for theirs, they say it has no leaks and worked great when they were runnin it. The other wants $10 and also says it worked great and had no leaks when they were running it. I know it seems like I should go for the $10 one, but heres pics of both so you guys can help me out!! The first one is the $50 one.... the file is too big to post on here so here is the link to it on printroom....

Here is the one that they want $10 for.... I don't know which to go for... thanx in advance for the help everybody!!

At those prices, I'd get both just in case one of them is bad.

LOL! I was thinking the same thing.

It'd be good to know how they got these radiators. It's not too often that someone changes a radiator just for shts and giggles.

Have you gone to a junkyard? Have you checked the classifieds on thirdgen.org? Some guys have moved from a v6 to a v8, and sell their old radiators. Even better, some of the v8 guys upgrade to a larger radiator (like a BeCool or Griffin), and sell their old V8 radiator.

Found a few on the classifieds, and forgot to mention this-

If the radiator is from an 82-84 f-body with a v6, it might actually be smaller than the 85-up 2.8/3.1 radiator. My '84 parts car with air conditioning's radiator wasn't as wide as my original '86 radiator. Wound up getting a radiator from a junkyard for $50 that looked brand new, with '87 Camaro' scrawled across it in grease pencil.

More Choices.....

Alright guyz, thanx for the replies! I got a few more questions.. would it be better to go for a V8 Radiator? I was thinkin maybe cause it'd probably cool better but i'm not sure. I put up a post lookin for radiators in the classifieds and got some replies.

V8 Radiator, good shape $75
V6 Radiator, 8000 miles on it, $35
91 3.1 Radiator 74,000 miles, $40

Let me know what you guyz think I should go for! thanx in advance again!!

I would.... but like TomP said, it might be smaller since its from an '82. Sorry man... I'm lookin for one that's either the same size or a little bigger.

Well the low mileage 3.1 would be my choice...

One other thing -- ask where the upper and lower hoses come out at. Some of the outlets are on the wrong side

Yeah, like I said, if it was from a v6 it might be smaller.

Good point, MD... didn't think about the radiator outlets. I think he'd just need to buy new hoses to get it to work with the different outlets, though...

Wow... Lots of Offers

Hey guyz, herez an update! I left for about an hour today, and had 3 more offers for radiators in my inbox. I currently have so many that I need to get things sorted out and figure out what I'm gonna do! One guy e-mailed me and said he can get me a Modine 3Core Radiator w/ brass tanks for $165 which includes shipping. Should I go for that? Here's a list of all the other offers I have ......
Ok, went through my e-mails and this is what I came up with...

1. Modine 3Core Radiator w/ brass tanks/$165 shipped
2. V6 Radiator/$50 + shipping
3. V8 Radiator/$75 + shipping
4. 305 V8 Radiator/Best Offer
5. V6 Radiator/$10 + shipping
6. '91 3.1L Radiator w/ 74K miles/$40 + shipping
7. '91 3.1L Radiator/$80 shipped
8. V6 Radiator w/ 8000 mi/$35 + shipping

That be all for now..... I know I'm prolly bein a pain, but I need help, I want to go with my best possible choice so I can get my Camaro runnin soon! Thanx guys!! :hail: :hail: :hail:

I think the Modine would be overkill for our v6s. However, if you plan on upgrading by adding 2 more cylinders in the future it may be a good investment.

Tom -- Remember that V* stick radiator I got off derfrank at our gathering this past summer? It's still sitting in the garage due to the different outlets (I cant use it -- yet)

Modine has a plant here in Middle Tennessee, and some of their radiators are nothing more than a stock replacement. They make high performance and even all aluminum radiators, but not all of them are. I would rather have the brass tanks on my radiator, but would not pay an extra $100 for the privelidge. I would go with the 3.1 liter radiator, and leave it at that. If you do decide to upgrade to a V8, you can worry about the radiator for it then. You may decide to sell the car in the meantime or not to do the swap.
