The Torque Convertor Clutch (TCC) solenoid? Well, it can go bad in two ways:
1) Burns out = TCC won't go into lockup, results in higher cruising RPM's, increased transmission temperature, lower gas mileage.
2) Sticking = TCC won't disengage when it engages, resulting in the trans remaining in lockup when the car slows down, which causes the car to stall. This is also common on the ... well, dammit, I can't remember the trans number... it's the 3-speed trans used on the front wheel drive cars from the mid 80's.
People -think- the TCC has gone bad when the car's RPM hunts (rev's up and down) when going up a hill under light throttle. It's just the computer getting confused, and engaging/disenaging the TCC solenoid.

actually, the 93 Bonnie I had did just this. some coolant mixed w/the tranny fluid & rusted up the tcc & made it in-op. Also trashed the friction plates, but that's for a different forum
The tach ws bouncing up & down on a straight-a-way
