My buddy replaced his 89 2.8 with a 96 3.8. Of course I went to a 1997 Z28 
Well after 11 consistent runs his average on his 96 bird is 16.1ish He has a best of 15.9 only once and never duplicated... So keep hope the 2.8 can beat stock to lightly modded 3.8 autos...
Our buddies 3.4 takes him off the line big time because he has 3.42 rear gears and the 3.8 has 3.08 rear gears... So never over look the benefit of the right gearing..... 3.73 or 4.10's are what ya need.

I've gotten my 99 GPGT to 15.5@88. I'm hoping that the lighter bird, 3.4 motor, and stock 3.42 gears will give a respectable showing
