Big problem - respond fast!

Yesterday, I put in a new coil, distributor, cap, rotor, plugs, and wires. Last night, and today after driving for a while the tach (and engine) start jumping up to whatever RPM and back down. Last night I thought it was the O2 sensor because I messed that up yesterday. But it happened again today after I disconnected the sensor. But I noticed last night and today after this happened that the grey and black plugs going to the coil were loose (because the clips are broken). Please tell me this is my problem. Because I will secure them, but I have some driving to do today.

Sounds like a very good start.

When my tach jumped, and car sputtered. I replaced the coil, and ICM at same time, and presto, its gone.

Not sure wich one was bad, or wiring, but it fixed it. I would start with that plug.

I belive your in the right area.

We're all good now. A long time ago I broke the clips that hold the black and grey pigtails on the coil. I guess they stayed on because the coil was old and rusty. But I put a new coil on and they kept wiggling loose. So I taped them down. The ironic part is I had planned to replace those pigtails on Sunday, but only the grey one came in. The black is on order.

Yep, lose clip. I have the same problem. And my coil is mounted up high and it pulls onthe wire. I had to do a wrangle wrap of some black tape and then siliconed it in place.

I check it ever so often to make sure the thing is on tight.
