some of you may remember me losing my 3rd and 4th gear in the tranny, the tranny still going strong on 2 gears, but i have a hella loud knock now, sounds like the lifters to me, i hope it isnt the mains, i just put them in about 10Kk kms ago, any other ideas?

Um... how about... not long? You're going to need to yank that engine, and do a rebuild on it.
Go to www.northernautoparts.com to get a full rebuild kit.

Work like mad on that GTI swap.. your camaro is already living on borrowed time.
The trans will probably hold up, 3/4 clutches are gone, but the band may have enough friction material left on it to hold up for a month.. mine didn't go overnight. Keep her manually in 2nd, in case you haven't already figured that out.. which you probably have since an attempted 2-3 shift will release the band and effectively put you in 1st or neutral (I don't remember the 700R4 power transfer schematic as well as I used to)
The motor? Borrowed time. If the loud knock is the lifters, you're probably either going to start grinding off cam lobes. That failure can occer rapidly. If it's the mains, well, I'm sure you can guess what that can lead to. And the added stress of constant high-rpm operation isn't going to help matters.
