Alternator harness question...

I had just put on a water pump today. Not as bad as I thought it would be once you get started.Wish I was the guy who invented RTV sealant.Anyway...I noticed my alternator had 3 wires coming from the harness. The RED is hot of course, the BROWN is the sense wire and there is a BLACK wire hanging loose.Should this BLACK wire be connected to ground somewhere? If so, I was thinking about bolting it to the alternator bracket or a good ground somewhere if this is a ground wire.Any comments?

-Ken

p.s.---- I looked in the alternaor and saw 4 leads.I believe my harness utilizes 3 of these leads.

The black wire should plug in to that plug in the back of the alternator. There should be a 3 wire plug going in to it. I think it's a reference wire , but I'm not sure I don't have my diagrams near me at the moment. hope that helps. I'll edit this post when I get a diagram.

yeah, the black wire has to be held by a rod on the side of the alt.
