HELP! Cranskshaft endplay question
HELP! Cranskshaft endplay question
I apologize if this is one of those "Well DUH" questions, but I was wondering how important crankshaft endplay was on the 660 motors?
The reason I am asking is that I finally got my new bearing set for my rebuild project, and it turns out that my endplay is .029 instead of the max of .008 (According to Haynes)
I can find lots of info on how to measure endplay, but nothing on what to do if it's wrong. What are my options? Previously I've rebuilt VW engines, and shims are the method of adjustment on those. Are they available for Chevys?
Obviously, replacing the crankshaft would make the problem go away, but cash is extremely tight right now, so that would delay me several months if I have to go that route. Will it make much of a difference to the life of the motor if I don't change it?
Thanks to all who reply, greatly appreciate any help on this.

of all the measurements i'd say crank thrust is the least important. as you said replacing the crank is the fix, shims aren't an option. don'tthink grinding undersize will help the end play problem
Thanks Ede, appreciate the response. I was afraid that might be the case, couldn't find anywhere that sold Chevy shims.
Well, guess it's time to start either saving for a new one, or use it as is.

I believe you can get a rebuilt crank for a 2.8/3.1 from http://www.northernautoparts.com on the cheap; I think they were $60 with a $60 core charge. They probably don't list it on their website so give them a call (phone # should be on the website).

yep a long long time ago. I saw my first catalog in junior high, [I was a grad in 91] buddies big brother got it by faking he was a business. I got on the catalog like by doing the same. It was a kind of wholesale catalog.
http://www.ltdcommodities.com was like they were. They ask for a business name but never ask about a whole sale license. Catalog says you must buy everything in 3's to get the low price but all of it is a lie. Play the game and you can fill out the form, just buy 1 of each and they send it to you without any payment info and at the cheap price. You pay them later when you get the invoice.
Then nothern went more public once I guess they realized everyone was lyin anyways. Since then the website is nice but as you said they don't have nearly as much stuff online as they sell.
They seam to be very slowly moving into the public eye. Real slow.
