putting trany into my bird this week got ques?
ok guys this week im putting the trany into my bird so i can drive that until my camaro is back from the body shop. im putting a 700r4 back into it but its from a late 80's s10. my ques are... basically the only thing i have to change is the tail shaft and the dipstick tube right? and what is the factory stall for the s10 torque converters? i thought or hopped it would be higher than the stock 700r4's in the f-bodys.

tail shaft should be same far as I know.
Gearing ratio will be tad different, but ok for temp use.
For searching references, and manuals.
The fbody manual trans sits in at angle, so rear mount will not align up.
also, manuals, the shifter is located about 7-9" forward on the s10 then the fbody.

i didnt think the tail shaft will be the same because it doesnt have the proper mounting area for the torque arm. thats why i have to change it. what do you mean gearing ratio will be different? other than that it will basically be a bolt in right?

your right on the torque arm
Gear ratios will be tad off, but if anything, lower geared which would be better for the track

Make sure you seat the torque convertor all the way in! When you bolt the trans to the engine, the flywheel shouldn't be mashed against the TC. When the trans bellhousing and engine bellhousing are bolted up and torqued down, the TC should be able to slide away from the flywheel. If the two are mashed together and you can't slide the TC towards the trans, you didn't engage the second set of splines inside the TC. The second set of splines is hard to engage... it's for the lockup clutch plate.
What gearing ratio are we talking about? All 700r4's got the same gears, no matter what. But if we're talking about the speedometer gear, yeah, it could be different.

ts length is the same.
I took an s10 t5 out, dropped in a camaro t5, rotated the rear mount, driveshaft went in just fine. No hitting.

ok cool. thanks dale. but now i got another small problem. i found out the trany is an 84 not a late 80's. so its only a 27 slpine input instead of a 30. is that ok? i planned on using the s10 torque converter and all so everything should be ok. does anyone know what the stock stall is for an 84 s10 torque converter? my friend said between 1800 and 2000rpm
