Gear Drive For V6

Hey guys I was wondering if there is a gear drive that will work on our V6's or have any of you done it. I want to try to reproduce the turbine sound that KITT had in the Knight Rider TV show on my V6 KITT. I have included a pic of a gear drive but its for a Chevy big block.

I'm assuming you have the MPFI 2.8, right? If so, I've heard that gear drives are NOT compatible for computer-controlled cars, something about the knock sensor picking up the gear noise and thinking that the engine is knocking hella bad and thus the computer retards the timing to compensate for it. If your car has been carbed, then it's okay, I guess. Anyone else want to take a stab at it? I'd just go true roller chain, and only if you needed to.

Or, get one of those turbo simulator sound FX kits, the one that's all electronic and stuff, but then again, that souds like aturbo, and not a supercharger sound. *shrug*

Car: 85 firebird
Engine: Pos 2.8 pulled and replaced with a 350 tpi motor converted to carb.
Transmission: 700r4, vette servo, shift kit, hayden 15"x8" trans cooler.
Even if you could find one for the 2.8 that worked with the ecm you'd get tired of it VERY fast and the only people you'd fool into thinking you had a turbo would be people who dont have a clue about cars in general.

Things seem cool till you get them, much like my car. I put the v8 in (which i love) drove it the first time and the 1-2 shift spins the tires and jerked the car hard! Cool then, annoying as hell now!!!!!!!! Esp when a cop is behind me, i listen to the rpm rise as i pray the tires dont spin too bad.

Yep, ditto. You would need to disable the knock sensor.

Yep, but then your computer wouldn't know if and when it's getting detonation, and then we'd have an even bigger set of problems...

Why would it matter??? A carbed car doesn't have anything to deal with detonation. If its gonna cause him problem with a gear drive, disable it. The tune it like a carb , put in a mechinacal advance.

Hey guys thanks for the info! I was hoping to get that turbo or supercharger hiss sound for my KITT conversion without spending the major bucks! O well back to the old drawing board!

Thanks guys!

They make some muffler tips on ebay that will give you that turbo whistle you want. Said to be the same part they use in movies to get the same effect. Like Fast n furious and the plastic stick on blower on that dodge. It wasn't making that spool noise.

You gonna do the stage 2 conversion???

With them little air foils that come out of the body. Wouldn't be to hard except for the exterior bodywork. Making them flush.

do a "Search title and description " search for " turbo exhaust tips" You can find them for $20

With the dual out let muffler on most V6 3rd gen. You should not have any back pressure issues. Of course only use one of them.

"The HARDER you hit the gas, the higher pitch "spool" the device will deliver, muck like a real turbo!!

The high-pitch tone this delivers is hard to pinpoint by an innocent bystander, so no one will no its coming from your tailpipe unless you tell them, we promise!!

Let them ask what's under your hood!!

A small CNC machined aluminum device which discreetly fits inside a vehicle's stock/aftermarket muffler pipe and on heavy acceleration emits soundfx extremely similar to that of a turbocharged vehicle. Depressing the gas pedal in some instances have released a backpressure in the muffler making the car sound like it has a Blow Off Valve. It cannot be easily distinguished between an accelerating turbocharged car! You will not be able to tell the difference nor will pedestrians or other drivers on the street.

Wow! The closest simulated soundfx of turbo "spooling" without spending $3,500+!!!

I will admit half the reason I want a turbo is for the cool sound. Even if I only got 5-7psi with minimal improvements. The sound would be so cool.

There's no knock sensor on an 85-89 2.8 MPFI motor.

Closest you can get to upgrading the stock timing chain is the full dual roller set, made ONLY by Cloyes, I got mine from Summit Racing 3 or 4 years ago, cost me $90. http://www.summitracing.com

Hrm, I didn't know that... I thought most computer-controlled cars had at least one knock sensor so it could retard timing if the engine started to detonate. With no knock sensor, a gear drive would be no problem, I suppose, if they made one for the 2.8 motor. NICE CAR, knight75...

I've seen the turbo simulators on Ebay for pretty cheap, but some states are making them illegal, I've heard.
