Can you do this?
I have an ac 2.8 in my car. I was wondering if I can just buy a non ac serp. belt for it? Or will it not work? I'm wondering if it is set up differently with ac and not with ac. Thanks

Unless you plan on removing the whole a/c compressor, ther's no reason toi get a new belt/do new routing. If you never turn it on, then there's no performance loss, except for the weight of the compressor sitting in the engine bay.
If it is removed, there is a routing for it. should be right beside your e-sticker on the hood (on mine it is)

Na, my ac makes an odd noise even when it is not on. I'm a little sick of the squeling, if i can just get another belt, why do they make ac delete pullys? Thanks

Its probally your a/c/ clutch going out mine is doing the same thing even when off although not as bad and only at very low RPMS to idle. Once summer is over I will probally by pass mine topo because the a/c still blows cold air. I think your 88 2.8 should have the same serp set up as mine. Mine has a belt routing sticker that shows with or with out the a/c and how to route it. I believe there should be enough room to just bypass it with out removing the compressor. Since some of these cars did come with out a/c you should be able to go to a parts store and ask for a belt for your car with out a/c instead of with and they should come out with the right size.... no measuring. If not though in the past When setting up ne engines or taking out pullies I have cut the old belt and had a friendhold the idler all the way up. I would route the cut belt the way its supposed to be and and mark it where it over laps. this should get you very close to where you need the belt to be. I usually get the right measurement the first time... every once in a while I would have to exchange it once for a bigger or smaller belt. Hope this helps.

I know in my car if I just get a belt that's shorter to go past the a/c, as the routing diagram shows, then the belt rubs on the water pump. When I take my a/c out I'm gonna get a delete pully so I don't have to mess with finding the right belt as I did when I changed the undercrank pully.

In my 2.8L 89 firebird the diagram shows that without A/c there is no a/c delete pully so you should be ok it just bypasses it no problem your 88 should be the same. His the last guy to post rubs because he has a different motor 3.1L so thats why he has a delete pully

I'm unaware the V6 has a a/c delete pulley - It's got a Air Pump Delete pulley, though. Sure you had it routed correctly?
