wild reading

ok, ive got a idle tps reading of .4
and a WOT reading @ 8.1
tell me what's up guys

(this is 2 different tps's)

check your multimeter... I find it difficult to believe a 5v reference line is generating an 8v signal

well, what setting should i have the volt meter set to then?
it's brand new.

Kinda depends on what settings are available. On most digital multimeters, you would have it set to 20v DC. Analog, could be 10v DC. The idea, though, is to set it to the setting that's the closest higher setting to what you intend to read.. i.e. if you have a 10v, 20v, and 50v setting, and you want to read a 12v battery, set it to 20v.

For a quick diagnosis to ensure the multimeter isn't defective on this note, go ahead and get the voltage of your battery after the car's been sitting for 30 minutes (no doors open, no lights on, radar detector off, etc), and then check it with the car idling, and post the results.

The only reason I question the multimeter here is again, the signal line the TPS works off of is a 5V line. If it's actually getting 8v or more, something is very very wrong (short or impending ECU doom)

uh... ok ill tell you right now, i have it set to 200v setting..... cuz thats the only one that was getting an idle reading that was at .4
(the smallest settting) but i won't have a chance to fool with it again till friday or saterday
thanks for the input.....i hope that there is not ecm impending doom tho... ive got enough problems with that car....
