I was told by autozone when I got my MAF to unhook the batt before changing it. Other wsie if you would take it back and say it don't work and say you didn't unhook the batt. They would not give you a new one.

Burnoff relay?

If your car is still throwing the MAF code and it's backfiring, you've still got a MAF problem, your ECM is not lying.

1. Take the relay off and connect terminals B and C on the relay (see the pics posted by Project: 85 2.8 bird) to the battery. If you hear a click that means the relay is operating.

2. With the battery voltage still applied check for continuity between terminals A and E on the relay (continuity means 0 resistance). If you have continuity then the relay is good.

3. Check to make sure the wires between the MAF and the relay have continuity.

4.Check the connectors at the relay and the MAF sensor. Mine had a bad connection because of the poor strength of the female parts of the connectors and some "goo" in the connectors which I assume is very dirty dielectric grease. You can clean the dielectric grease out and increase the "grab" of the female parts of the connector (this might need clarification). Adding some new dielectric grease is probably a good idea.

5. If this still fails, there may be a wire that is connected at the sensor or at the relay that is faulty. You can check these according to the circuit picture posted by Project: 85 2.8 bird.

Let us know how it goes.

I didn't have any problems with the K&Ns. I noticed a small improvement.

If you have a very sensitive MAF, particularly aftermarket, yes a K&N WILL affect it. Mine did.

I had to clean it every week and a half due to oil buildup. If I didn't, it would stumble at idle and hesitate during acceleration.

I'm not going to be running anymore K&N's after that episode. I'll stick to my paper, thanks.

Well the oil is supposed to be what helps it filter better. I imagine no oil means poor filtration.

Cleaning the MAF is simple.. Disconnect it and remove it (make sure you disconnect your battery before this)...stand the MAF upright on the ground and take some Electrical Parts Cleaner and spray the element lightly. Let it dry....doesn't take long. Then I spray it again. Then turn the MAF over, and spray the back side of the element, if you can. If not, don't worry about it. Let it all dry out, shouldnt take long...then bolt it back up, reconnect it, and hook the battery back up. That electrical parts cleaner should take the gunk and oil off of it, while leaving behind no residue of its own....it's non-conductive, and dries quick too.

I just run a piece of one of them foam filters for the triangle shaped 1000cmf eddy air cleaners.

Oil does make em better but I don't use it. Just wash it more often.
