Power slow to get to rear wheels??

Hi. Haven't been here in a LONG time (used to post as AAustin50).

Anyway, just bought my third 3rd Gen Camaro, a nice clean '82.

Had the 2.8 rebuilt, cleaned everything up nice and it's running great. Only problem is the power is not getting to the rear wheels very quickly. Automatic transmission but it "feels" like a slipping clutch. I'm guessing the torque converter might be going bad? When starting off from a dead stop, the rpms climb way up and then the transmission slowly starts engaging and eventually hooks up as the car starts rolling 10-15 mph. As it gets up to highway speed it seems to be shifting properly and runs smoothly. It does the same thing when going in reverse-takes too long for the power to transfer.

Had the front/rear seals and filter changed on the tranny while we had it out. Everything's connected properly, new tranny fluid and it's at the proper level.

Any ideas? Thanks in advance for your assistance.

Congratulations, you need a new transmission. Nothing to do with the torque converter buddy.. Only time you'd have an issue like that with the converter is if someone put a higher-stall converter in...in which case if you mashed the gas, your "flash stall" would be higher, so the car might not move much until it hit, say, 1500, or 2000 rpms, and then it would jump forward.

Slow engagement in an auto means slipping clutch packs. Which means fried tranny. Time for a rebuild. Or if you're cheap and or poor (like me).....dump a bottle of Lucas trans additive in there....it might be called Slip Fix, I forget. But it will give you a little extra clutch grip, for a short while anyways. Also DO NOT I repeat DOOOO NOTTT flush the transmission. Changing the fluid out at this point will probably cause total failure since the metal shavings and worn off clutch material in the trans fluid now is most likely holding it together.

Thanks for the detailed info Nixon1. That's what I wanted to know. I was afraid of that but, what the heck, the car's 22 years old. It's not a daily driver, yet, so I've got time to get it fixed. Ought to be a very nice car when that's done. Rescued this car from a pumpkin patch, literally, and it's a keeper. Only 55k miles, no rust, straight body, nearly perfect interior. Ought to be a very nice car when we're finished working out the bugs.
