My car is almost at the 165,000 mile mark and I have what feels like a slight slip. I've had the car since 132,000 and as I know for sure there hasn't been a tranny rebuild since then, and I'm almost positive there wasn't one before but I don't know for sure.

This winter the firebirds coming off the road hopefully due to horribly snowy winters and I want to either rebuild the auto that's in there or get a standard put in. Hopefully my girlfriends brother will be helping me with most of this if not all of it because while I like to do things myself, rebuilding or installing a new tranny is waaaaaay outta my league.

If I rebuilt the automatic I'll be getting a probuilt rebuild kit. I was wondering what it would normally cost in labor for a shop to rebuild a 700r4 or whatever is in my firebird...pretty sure it's a 700r4. I was also wondering what it cost for a shop to put a 5spd in since I'm gonna have to pay my girls brother at least something and I'm wondering what they usually charge so I have an idea...

I'm basically just wondering what the performance differences would be, power loss differences and whatnot between the 5spd and the automatic and what would be more cost effective since I do have a quite limited budget at the moment...

Get it rebuilt right & solid, reinstall, mission done.
Of the 60* V6, your year is one of the best choices for upgrades. Better internals & yours is model before computer of 4L60E trannys.
